I coach creators (photographers, journalists and writers) in finding the emotional heart of their story. Usually, once that is clear, the rest follows naturally.

It is part of the creative process: getting stuck and not knowing why you started this anymore. As a story doctor, I help you get back to the core of your project. Often, you find it where you were not looking for it: in your own deepest motivation to start this project. The great thing is that what is close to the heart actually always makes sense. In the process, I’m also a geek and like to use all the tools of storytelling to help you find a good narrative arc. I work with clients who work on non-fiction projects in text and images, as well as fiction. Under "testimonials" you can read how others have benefited from my coaching.

When do you need a story doctor?

• You have a mountain of material, but can’t see the story anymore
• You’re still looking for the engine of your story
• You’ve been investigating a topic for years, but can’t come up with a concrete project
• You’re looking for the right form for your project

How does it work?

We beginnen met een telefonisch kennismakingsgesprek van tien minuten. In dat gesprek stel ik je twee vragen: waar gaat je project over? En wat wil je van mij? We kijken of ik begrijp wat jij wilt maken. Na afloop kan ik je een offerte op maat sturen. Je kunt rechtstreeks bij mij een strippenkaart afnemen, of via de Nederlandse Vereniging van Journalisten, de NVJ.

En vervolgens gaan we van start. Zie jezelf voor je op de atletiekbaan. Jij rent – je bent en blijft in de lead – en ik ben er om je vanaf de zijlijn toe te juichen. Als je in de flow zit, hoeven wij elkaar niet te zien. Maar als je tegen hordes oploopt, kijk ik met je mee. Dat kan gaan van hoe je een goede centrale vraag vindt of hoe om te gaan met zelftwijfel of verminderde motivatie. Met mijn ervaring als maker en mijn achtergrond als psycholoog bespaar ik jou dat je zinloos hetzelfde rondje aflegt in je hoofd of erger nog: nooit tot dat gedroomde project komt.
