Bureau Schrijfkracht
Welcome to the website of Bureau Schrijfkracht. BS was founded by Paulien Bakker (Amsterdam, Netherlands).
I believe in contactful journalism. I believe in the power of a well-written story to connect lives and worlds. And I believe it is my job as a writer to make you, reader, hooked on what's happening in the world (again).
After finishing my studies in both Journalism and Psychology, I started working at a magazine on personnel management (IntermediairPW) in early 2001. At the end of 2005 I became a freelance journalist, writing for leading Dutch newspapers and magazines, such as De Volkskrant, Vrij Nederland and Flow.
As a psychologist, I like to write about what makes people tick. About dreams, motivations and everything that keeps us from achieving them. I write about people in far flung places who’re otherwise not being heard - Sunni militias in Iraq, a Syrian suicide bomber, or an African journalist struggling under dictatorship. And of course about people right here, that conquer breast cancer for instance or monitor the alcohol laws.
Apart from writing in depth stories, I also work as a freelance editor-in-chief (www.tijdschriftenmakers.nl). Because again, making a good quality magazine is all about reaching your reader.
